Shifting Spaces is a piano trio which explores the role that space plays in music. Within the piece exists two wildly different characters: one with a rich and dense texture (defined by its long melodic phrases and lush instrumentation) and another, stark and even pointillistic in approach (marked by its disjointed interjections and plucked strings). In bringing together these incredibly disparate worlds, space became its own compositional device. The result is a piece which attempts to both expand and contract an audience’s perception of musical space throughout its duration.
